Associate of Hospitality and Hotel Management

This is not a post graduate program, but I recommend it as it incorporates two OFQUAL Diplomas at level 4 and 5 and is one of the few programs that focuses on Hotel Management rather than Tourism and Hospitality Management.

This program offers students the flexibility to complete their final year of a UK degree either online or in-person at a campus in the UK.

By pursuing this course of study, students can demonstrate to potential employers their commitment and interest in the field of hotel management.

You can view more details of this program at SCPU Business School here

Hotel and Hospitality Management education

While I mainly write about Post Graduate programs, one Undergraduate program I strongly recommend to potential students looking at eventual study in Europe is the Ecole de Commerce SCPU Associate degree in Hospitality and Hotel Management.

This program incorporates two United Kingdom OFQUAL Diploma programs and graduates have a selection of UK Universities they can complete a Bachelor of Hospitality with.

University of Derby
Bournemouth University
University of Central Lancashire
University of Sunderland
University of Northampton

This program is taught by E-Tutoring system and is assessed through the writing of a series of assignments for each subject.

By completing OFQUAL programs before applying to the UK University, the student demonstrates that they are serious in studying.

The hotel industry in the UK and other western countries are looking for qualified staff. This program gives people an International (British) Hotel Management qualification.

Two very non traditional Masters degrees

There are two very noon traditional masters degrees issued in the United Kingdom.

Cambridge and Oxford Master of Arts

Both of these universities will upgrade holders of their Bachelor of Arts degree to a Master of Arts award 3-4 years after the person has graduated with their Bachelor of Arts.

Edinburgh University

Where English Universities (Cambridge and Oxford) issue Bachelor degrees at the end of three years of Study. Edinburgh University has a 4 year undergraduate degree which leads to students graduating with a Master of Arts as their first degree.

Over the past decade the Scottish Universities have started to follow the international trend of 3 year (undergraduate degrees), however Edinburgh University still offer a four year MA as a first degree.

Ukraine a major provider of education services particularly in the field of medical education

One of the side effects the Russian /Ukraine war has highlighted is the number of students from India and Africa attending universities in Ukraine.

In higher education news reports there are numerous stories of such students escaping from the war in Ukraine and of the need for schools outside of Ukraine to help these students to complete their degrees.

As an “Old Professor”, I was not aware of the role Ukraine played in this very important market.

The main program international students studied in Ukraine appears to have been Medicine.

Executive Management Certificate

One way to decide if completing an MBA is for you is to enrol into an Executive certificate in a single subject. (For Example – Human Resource Management)

The executive certificate can be integrated into a Post Graduate Diploma or MBA program. Thus a student can either graduate with only an Executive certificate or continue to earn an MBA.

The program (via earning a Post Graduate diploma first) can lead to a Masters from a number of UK Universities, for example.

  • University of Bolton
  • University of Portsmouth
  • University of Sunderland
  • Solent University  – Southampton

Degree Accreditation

What is the difference between earning an accredited and non accredited degree ?

How important an issue is it ?

Are all legal degrees accredited ?

These answers depend upon what you mean by accreditation.

The term started in the United States where the State governments are responsible for licensing educational institutions and the Federal Department of Education has over the past 70 years become more and more the financier of Higher Education for its citizens.

In the US there are two forms of accreditation. Institutional Accreditation and accreditation by Professional Accreditation Bodies.

Institutional Accreditation is very similar to an ISO quality control system where the processes and physical resources of the institution to measure aggregate standard set by the accreditation agency.

Professional Accreditation Bodies review the programs to see it fulfils the knowledge requirement for the profession the qualification is designed for.

Legally anyone can establish an accreditation agency but to be “recognised” an agency needs to be either a member of the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) or recognised directly by the US Department of Education for student funding.

To complicate things some foreign governments, the United Kingdom and United Arab Emirates for example only recognise degrees USA degrees accredited from a regionally accredited schools, not nationally accredited schools (both regional and nationally accredited schools typically are Institutionally Accredited).

I hope this helps your understanding of accreditation a little more.

Accreditation USA

Accreditation in the USA varies from the rest of the World.

In the USA accreditation is an entirely voluntary process, carried out by private non-government agencies.  Over the past few years accreditation in the USA has generally meant accreditation from one of the six regional accreditation associations recognised by the USA Federal Ministry of Education or the Distance Education and Training Council.

In the United States there are also approximately 60 professional accreditation agencies recognised by the USA Department of Education or the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA).

Elsewhere in the world, in particular Commonwealth countries, this professional recognition is carried by professional qualification awarding bodies.

Outside of the USA Universities are chartered (UK) or licensed by their respective governments, but not generally accredited.  The word “University” is generally restricted and needs Ministry of Education permission to be used.

Many countries have accreditation Boards or Councils etc. which accredited particular courses e.g.:- Malaysian – LAN, Ghana- NAB, Australia – ARC etc. These bodies generally register the institution and only accredit their courses.

Through out the world various professional bodies (e.g.: Institute of Financial Accountants) and business (e.g.: Microsoft) accredit courses taught by educational institutions and accredits them to teach their programs.

Master of Engineering Programs

There are three different styles of Masters degrees that I would recommend a Professional Engineer to consider to upgrade their qualifications.

Master of Engineering
A Master of Engineering in the same discipline area as the candidates existing Bachelor of Engineering degree, it is designed to develop the candidates broad knowledge in. It is ideal for new engineers wishing to extend their knowledge in their specific discipline area.

Master of Engineering Practice
This program is designed like a mini doctorate program, where the candidate researches in depth, a topic within the Engineering discipline area their existing Bachelor degree is in.

It is the ideal qualification for Engineers wishing to complete a doctorate.

Master of Professional Engineering
This program is designed for Professional Engineers who wish to develop their knowledge of the administration of engineering projects and to more effectively lead a team of engineers.

For more details about any of these please email me at theoldprofessor@mastersprograms.education
